Preparing to provide care at the end of life.
Caring for someone who is dying can be difficult and frightening, but it is also something that most nurses face in their professional role. Previous studies have shown that nursing students feel uncertain about meeting patients and relatives in palliative care, end-of-life care.
Palliativvårdsappen is an educational game on the subject, designed to make the actual meeting with the patient less frightening and unfamiliar. In the game, students are presented with various scenarios in which they must decide what measures to take and consider what to say to, for example, a fictional dying patient and her daughter. The choices the player makes have consequences, which leads the player to new insights, for example, if the patient suddenly experiences pain or becomes frightened.
The game includes a knowledge section, scenarios with patients and relatives, and a follow-up seminar with teachers and students. The app was developed on behalf of researchers from the University of Skövde, the University of Gothenburg, and Sophiahemmet University College in Stockholm.
