How do we talk to children about their everyday lives online? How do we make children aware of grooming – that there are adults who contact children with the intention of later committing sexual abuse? The curriculum emphasizes the school's responsibility to give students the tools to navigate more safely online. By having children play Parkgömmet, educators open up safe conversations about grooming, self-esteem, setting boundaries, and rights.
In Parkgömmet, students hide treasures on an adventure island, but someone is trying to get hold of their clues to their treasure. Parkgömmet is a game with built-in AR technology, combining a classic board game with an app. Students are challenged with fun mini-games, win gold coins, and compete against each other. Social interaction is an important part of the game, as is the interaction between sensory impressions and motor skills when the children move the pieces on the physical game board.
After the game is over, a discussion led by the teacher takes place, based on the children's experiences of the game and their own experiences of the internet. The method material includes discussion cards, suggested questions, and more information about grooming.
Parkgömmet is based on research into authentic chat logs where perpetrators have contacted children for sexual purposes. It was initiated by Change Attitude and developed by us in collaboration with the University of Skövde. It is funded by the World Child Foundation and the Svenska Postkodstiftelsen, which makes it possible to distribute the game free of charge to all primary schools in Sweden.
