PicPecc

PicPecc is a project that involves developing an app that allows children with cancer to rate their symptoms and well-being. The client is the University of Gothenburg (GPCC) and the partners are Uppsala University, University West, University of Borås, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Norra Älvsborg Hospital (NÄL), Södra Älvsborg Hospital (SÄS), Skaraborg Hospital (SKAS), the University of Pretoria, the University of Free State, the University of Western Cape, and the Red Cross Hospital.

The aim of the project is to develop, implement, and investigate the use of a digital tool, namely pictorial support in person-centered care for children (Picpecc), to provide children undergoing cancer treatment with optimal symptom relief and increased/maintained well-being.

Children's right to communication forms the basis of this project, and children's communication regarding nausea, fear, pain, fatigue, anxiety, and well-being plays a central role. The child's own story forms the basis for the professionals' decisions regarding care measures. The use of person-centered care in pediatric and adolescent healthcare presents several challenges, such as insufficient knowledge of children's psychosocial age-related development and/or maturity, or insufficient linguistic and/or cultural competence.

The project is based on universal design, which means that all assessments are explained and carried out with support functions such as text, images, and audio. This project will work with children with cancer, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to develop Picpecc, which can be used to report symptoms during chemotherapy, needle procedures, post-operative care after surgery for tube placements, and stem cell transplants.

PicPecc is being developed in collaboration with GPCC, and the project is a joint venture between Sweden and South Africa. These are examples of two countries with completely different conditions, but which nevertheless share challenges, one of which is language.
